INTERVIEW: TRANSLATION AND WELLNESS

On January 2019, Lilian Santini, who supports entrepreneurs and companies through marketing strategy and brand design, asked me some cool questions to start “Lingostories,” her series of interviews with language professionals.

I wanted to share what we talked about with you, in case you were wondering how I chose my niche, what you should do in case you are interested in it too and what is the most challenging part of working with wellness translations.

Intro

💁 Macarena specializes in translation for healthcare, wellness, education and business communication. She has been a translator for over 4 years and loves reading, writing, traveling, doing yoga and meditating.

🎤 You have chosen wellness as your translation niche. Was it always the plan? What led you to this specialization?

At first, I didn’t really have a plan to specialize in one area. But then I started reading about how important it is to choose a niche as a translator.

I knew that healthcare and wellness were the right niches for me, since I already had a lot of experience in them and they are part of my daily life. I am a health geek: I’m constantly reading about the healthcare industry, about fitness, nutrition, self-growth and similar subjects. It’s my passion. That’s why I enjoy translating about these topics so much!

🎤 What advice would you give any translator looking to break into the world of wellness?

Follow leaders on the topic (such as Dr. Greguer), read magazines, books and articles, write a blog, keep yourself updated on the industry trends. Become an expert and position yourself as one on every platform, especially on LinkedIn. If you know you are good at it, make sure that everyone else knows it as well.

🎤 What is the most challenging part of your translation work in wellness?

Honestly, I find no challenges. I really enjoy being an entrepreneur. I really enjoy translating. I really enjoy the fields I work in. I enjoy learning new things every day. I appreciate being location-independent. I appreciate being in charge of my own time.

I think that when you are aligned with who you truly are, everything flows effortlessly. And that’s exactly where I am now.

Thanks for reading!
Maca.
